FEBI Holds Workshop on Methodology, Academic Writing, and Bridging Course for Bidik Misi Students

On Friday, October 23, 2020, the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business held a compelling event—the FEBI Workshop on Methodology, Academic Writing, and Bridging Course for Bidik Misi Students. This event catered to exceptional students benefiting from the Bidik Misi scholarship. Dr. Ahmad Salehudin, the Vice Dean III for Student Affairs and the Supervisor of Bidik Misi, spearheaded the event, which revolved around the theme “Academic Writing and Bridging Course: Becoming a Highly Competitive Young Professional.”

The FEBI Workshop on Methodology, Academic Writing, and Bridging Course for Bidik Misi Students was conducted virtually via the Zoom platform and live-streamed on YouTube. A total of 137 participants joined on the Zoom platform throughout the event. The workshop featured two distinguished speakers, namely Risqi Umar Al Hashfi, S.E.I., M.Sc. (Research Associate at PKEBS UGM) and Novianti Fuanda, S.Hum., M.A (Bridging Course Lecturer at FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga), who shared their expertise relevant to the event’s theme.

During his presentation, Risqi Umar elucidated the best practices in composing academic works, stating, “When crafting academic works, such as a thesis, the inclusion of irrelevant literature often feels contrived. Additionally, students may encounter challenges accessing literature, particularly in foreign languages when utilizing international journals.” He also underscored the importance of identifying problems and ensuring their resolution as key considerations in creating scholarly literature.

Meanwhile, as the second speaker, Fuanda delved into the acceptance criteria for writing, highlighting aspects such as marking criteria, task achievement, grammatical range and accuracy, coherence, and lexical resource. Before concluding her presentation, Fuanda imparted valuable tips for English writing, stressing the importance of crafting effective yet concise sentences, organizing ideas before writing, and becoming accustomed to constructing sentences directly in English to avoid vocabulary mismatches that may arise from initially writing in Indonesian.

The morning session commenced with an opening address by Dr. Ahmad Salehudin, the Vice Dean 3 for Student Affairs and the Supervisor of Bidik Misi. In his remarks, Ahmad Salehudin stated, “The aim of organizing the FEBI Workshop on Methodology, Academic Writing, and Bridging Course is to offer information access and consolidation for exceptional students at FEBI, particularly those benefiting from Bidik Misi and KIP scholarships.” This event serves as a means to enrich students’ knowledge and provides an intellectual assessment for the Supervisor of Bidik Misi.

Additionally, Ahmad Salehudin stated that students receiving Bidik Misi and KIP scholarships are outstanding students who will bear the torch for the Indonesian government, serving as beacons of hope for the nation’s future. He further remarked, “Outstanding students possess vertical mobility that necessitates more than just financial support, it requires intellectual, knowledge, and network investments to enable them to compete effectively at both national and international levels.”
