On Friday (9/11), the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta held a General Study with the theme “Acceleration of the Millennial Generation in the Digital Era.” The event was held at the Convention Hall of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and featured Rangga Almahendra, ST., MM., Ph.D., a lecturer at Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta, as a speaker. Rangga, along with his wife Hanum Rais, is a novelist whose works have been adapted into films. Their latest adaptation is “Rangga and Hanum,” based on the novel “Faith and the City.”
Dr. Syafiq Mahmadah Hanafi, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business, stressed the significance of this general study, particularly for the new students enrolling the faculty in 2018. He encouraged the students to fully engage with the event, highlighting the presence of esteemed speakers. Following the opening, the event proceeded with a presentation moderated by FEBI lecturer Izra Berakon, S.E.I., M.Sc.
During his presentation, Rangga discussed the significant changes occurring in various sectors of life due to the development of digital technology. He discussed the potential disappearance of eight job categories in the future, such as taxi drivers, travel agents, translators, reporters, pilots, accountants, miners, and even teachers or lecturers. While the accuracy of these predictions remains uncertain, he underscored the importance of equipping graduates with digital-era competencies, emphasizing that a degree alone may not be sufficient.
“Skills and broad insights are more needed in today’s workforce, with degrees serving as just an entry requirement. Beyond academic qualifications, a college graduate’s overall capabilities and competencies will be thoroughly evaluated,” he concluded.
