FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga Collaborates with Bank Indonesia and BPKH to Host ICIEB 2024: International Conference on Islamic Economics and Business

The Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI) UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, in collaboration with Bank Indonesia and the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH), successfully held the 3rd International Conference on Islamic Economics and Business (ICIEB) 2024. The event took place on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 30-31) at the Grand Hall of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on the first day and at the Sahid Raya Hotel Yogyakarta on the second day.  

Seven universities partnered with FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga as co-hosts, including the Department of Economics of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), Alma Ata University, UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, PGRI University Yogyakarta (UPY), Annuqoyah University Sumenep, FEBI UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, and UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. The event was also supported by several sponsors, including PT Yipu Teknologi Alami, Bank Syariah Indonesia, Bank BPD DIY, and Asuransi Bumida.  

The first day of ICIEB featured parallel sessions, providing participants with the opportunity to share experiences and insights through paper presentations. Achmad Nurdany, the program coordinator for ICIEB 2024, explained that this event is part of the FEBI International Week series, which also includes the International Short Course (ISC) 2024, attended by participants from approximately 12 countries.  "Within the paper submission process of less than two months, ICIEB 2024 received more than 100 paper submissions, with approximately 120 presenters participating, both online and offline. This hybrid format allowed us to accommodate speakers from various parts of the world, enhancing inclusivity and diversity," he stated. 

The second day featured a plenary session attended by the Director General of Hajj and Umrah, Prof. Hilman Latif, MA., Ph.D.; the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Dr. Phil. H. Al Makin, M.A.; the Dean of FEBI, Dr. Afdawaiza; as well as deans and internal officials of UIN Sunan Kalijaga. In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Phil. Al Makin, M.A., emphasized that this conference aims to enhance and inspire discussions on issues related to Islamic economics and business. "This conference serves as a crucial platform to bring together researchers and practitioners in the field of Islamic economics and business from around the world," he said.  

The Dean of FEBI, Dr. Afdawaiza, added that in today's rapidly evolving economic landscape, the need for innovative and sustainable approaches to financial systems cannot be overlooked. “At FEBI, we recognize our vital role in addressing these global challenges. ICIEB serves as a premier forum for academics, practitioners, and students worldwide to gather, share knowledge, and collaborate in seeking innovative solutions that promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth," he explained.  

Subsequent sessions featured presentations by keynote speakers. Prof. Baharom Abdul Hamid from INCEIF University, Malaysia, delivered a presentation on "Islamic Finance and its Impact on Inclusive Growth and Sustainability," while Prof. Dian Masyita from the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII) discussed "Future Trends on Islamic Finance Digital Asset." Other speakers, such as Dr. Rahmatina A. Kasri from the University of Indonesia, Dr. M Ghafur Wibowo from FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and Greget Kalla Buana from UNDP, also shared valuable insights into the development and role of Islamic finance in fostering inclusive and sustainable economies.

Prof. Hilman Latif highlighted the significant positive economic impact of Hajj and Umrah in Indonesia, emphasizing the need for collaboration among various stakeholders, including academics, to create a secure, trustworthy, sustainable, and beneficial Hajj financial system for all.
