The Student Association of the Master's Program in Islamic Economics (HMPM) of the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, successfully hosted an International Seminar as part of the Islamic Economic Consortium (IEC) 2024. The two-day hybrid event, held on November 14-15, 2024, at the 5th-floor FEBI Auditorium, focused on the theme "The Contribution of Islamic Finance to the SDGs: Supporting the Halal Industry in Developing Countries."

The seminar was attended by Dr. Ibi Satibi, S.H.I., M.Si., Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Cooperation; Dr. Muhammad Ghafur Wibowo, S.E., M.Sc., Chair of the Master of Sharia Economics Program; Dr. Siti Nur Azizah, S.E.I., M.E.I., Program Secretary; and Galuh Tri Pambekti, S.E.I., M.E.K., a doctoral candidate at UGM Yogyakarta. The international seminar featured national and international speakers, including Dr. Leo Indra Wardhana, S.E., M.Sc., CFP (Head of the Economics and Business Department Gadjah Mada University’s Vocational School) and Dr. Muhammad Abduh (School of Business and Economics, Universiti Brunei Darussalam). A total of 150 participants attended the event in person, while an additional 50 joined the Zoom meeting. Attendees hailed from a diverse range of universities.

The event was officially opened by Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business, in charge of Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Ibi Satibi, S.H.I., M.Si. In his opening remarks, he expressed gratitude and appreciation for the continued support of this international seminar, which has consistently featured exceptional speakers. 'This event is a source of great pride for the Master of Sharia Economics program as we strive to foster an academic environment. It also demonstrates the significant potential of our program, not only nationally but internationally," stated Dr. Ibi Satibi. He expressed his hope that all participants would generate innovative ideas and thoughts that could contribute to the future development of Islamic economics. "We hope that all participants attending this event can produce innovative ideas to be developed further for the advancement of Islamic economics in the future," Dr. Ibi Satibi added.

Subsequently, Dr. Muhammad Ghafur Wibowo, S.E., M.Sc., Chair of the Master of Sharia Economics Program, expressed his hope that this event would enhance the capabilities of MES students. "This IEC agenda is a form of developing Islamic economic thought, which has great potential to support the achievement of the SDGs. Furthermore, the Master of Sharia Economics Program continues to strive to enhance student capabilities through various programs," he concluded.

The event proceeded in a dynamic and progressive manner. In addition to the clear and enlightening material presented by both speakers, enriching the discourse on Islamic economics on the global stage, the event was also marked by intensive discussions with participants. This event made a significant contribution to the urgency of international regulations and standards for Sharia economics. The seminar noted that the lack of harmonization of standards in Sharia financial products at the global level remains a challenge, particularly due to differing interpretations of Sharia law across countries and the difficulty in developing regulations that meet international standards.

The seminar also recommended that, in the context of globalization, regulatory harmonization is crucial to boost investor confidence and expand the Islamic finance market to an international scale. The event concluded at 12:00 WIB, marked by the presentation of mementos by Dr. Siti Nur Azizah, S.E.I., M.E.I. May we continue to strive in preserving and developing the ecosystem of Islamic economic education on a global scale!
